Judith Beheading Holofernes by Artemisia Gentileschi (c. 1611-2)
It does not surprise me that the most graphic depiction I’ve seen so far was also by a woman!
Judith and Holofernes by Lavinia Fontana (c. 1592-4)
From sea monsters, I have turned to be seriously fixated on the representation of women in Renaissance and Baroque art. I find Lavinia Fontana’s art intriguing because of her unique perspective of being a woman depicting famous figures of her own gender. I have many thoughts on the depictions of heroic women as static and a lot of other things swirling around in my head but I don’t know if any of them are worth saying because I’m sure they’ve all been said before. I need to find some books on this!
